Essay!

My essay was supposed to be about this topic: How do social media change our understanding of individual identity, with regard to the kinds of people we have in our social networks? But after doing some research and I have watched the new movie about how Facebook was invented, I would rather write an essay about how Facebook controls our life and how children and youth are exposed to these social networks.

Essay.

The world today is very controlled by our social networks. They control how we connect with other people. We are now able to exchange content like pictures and videos to each other wherever we are in the world. We use these networks as a connection channel, where we easily can reach each other and our personal life is not that private anymore. We love to share our personal information with other people. If we take a look at Facebook in particular, here we can become “friends” with whoever we want. But are they all our “friends”? We add the people that we do not actually know by heart, but we know who they are. Are we still willing to share all our information with them? Clearly we are.

When I was thirteen years old there were no such thing as social networks, and to get in touch of each other we used our “old” cell phones or went to each other houses. Our personal life was well covered unless we wanted to tell other people. These days it is normal that children even in primary school have Facebook. Is this really a smart thing? There are always a lot of teasing in this age group, is it wise to open for several ways to let them bullying each other? The development of Facebook has gone to far, and my opinion is that children that age should be outside playing, not sitting inside writing on Facebook.

A statistic survey about teens and social media says that “Content creation by teenagers continues to grow, with 64% of online teenagers ages 12 to 17 engaging in at least one type of content creation, up from 57% of online teens in 2004”, (teen and social media, 2008.) This shows that the teenage use of social network has increased and we can only imagine how it will be like in five years. Internet is a dangerous place for young people and the parents or guardians should set strict lines and teach the children about safety online.

“Social network sites (SNSs) such as such as Friendster, CyWorld, and MySpace allow individuals to present themselves, articulate their social networks, and establish or maintain connections with others”, (The Benefits of Facebook “Friends:” Social Capital and College Students’ Use of Online Social Network Sites, 23 aug, 2008). This is a very good description of what social networks are. These networks has not excited for very long. I remember I got my first Facebook profile when back in 2007. And when I have talked other friends about when they open theirs, they all respond with the year 2007. We have all heard about the new movie that is released about the beginning of Facebook, called “the social network”. It shows that Facebook started back in February 2004, but where only for Harvard students at first. The man behind Facebook is named Mark Zuckerberg, and he is worth billions of dollars these days. Facebook has spread worldwide, and everybody knows what Facebook is. “Created in 2004, by 2007 Facebook was reported to have more than 21 million registered members generating 1.6 billion page views each day (Needham & Company, 2007), (at el The benefits of Facebook.., 23. Aug, 2008). This shows how fast it reached people, and it is still growing.

But how does social networks like Facebook and other networks influence our life? Is it possible to get addicted to Facebook? I believe it is absolutely possible to become addicted to this network, and the younger people are when they start a profile on facebook, the higher the risk is. “The Internet has been linked both to increases and decreases in social capital. Nie (2001), for example, argued that Internet use detracts from face-to-face time with others, which might diminish an individual’s social capital”, (at el The benefits of Facebook.., 23.aug, 2008). I think this argument on how internet decreases people`s everyday social life is very interesting. We do talk a lot with friends and relatives on Facebook. Is this keeping us from actually talking to them face to face? I think people will become more “stay at home” persons as Facebook keep developing. There are always new apps and games and so on. And through Facebook you can see what goes on in people`s life. Some even have link to their own blog on their profile where they share even more information about themselves. Is Facebook and other networks replacing our real social life is a question I would like to raise. I think Facebook is going to be such a huge thing later on, even more that it is now. That might involve several risk as people becoming antisocial and are more willing to sit at home on Faceook than actually going out meeting friends and other familiar people. This is how predict the future. We are able to access Facebook wherever we are, on the phone, computers and so on. Soon there will be other more specialized technology on how we can be on Facebook constantly.

“The strong linkage between Facebook use and high school connections suggests how SNSs help maintain relations as people move from one offline community to another. It may facilitate the same when students graduate from college, with alumni keeping their school email address and using Facebook to stay in touch with the college community”, (et al The benefits of Facebook.., 23.aug, 2008). Facebook is a network where we are able to maintain contact with people we graduated with or went to a camp, concert, dated and etc. And when we go overseas to study like I have done, we are able to keep touch with the people at home. I have to admit that my Facebook use has increased after I came down here. I hardly used Facebook before, maybe three four times a week at max. I feelt there were more important things to do. I feelt talking to people face to face was the most important thing. I can understand the importance of Facebook to be able to have contact with friends and loved ones. But what I do not understand is why children and youth in primary school and the early years have to be exposed to Facebook and other networks in the same way adults are. Where are the parents? Back in Norway there is a young ten year old girl that has made a blog where she writes about her life as a ten year old. Children that age are not able to realize what is proper behavior or not, and other children write ugly comments on her post. This girl also uses video blog and the videos has been uploaded on you tube where people have remixed them to bully the girl. I think this is a really good example on how social networks can increase the bullying and teasing in this age group. My question is, should there be an age limit to some of these social networks? I think there should be restrictions on how old people should be before we have seven year olds with their own Facebook profile. There is a lot of people with wrong intentions out in the world and to maintain the security over our children there should be rules and restriction to the usage of these networks. The development in social networks is huge, and new ones are invented all the time, my concern is how the children and the youth are being exposed to them and how it is making them even more inactive as we have seen with video and computer games. I hope that these social networks take this growing problem seriously before it is out of control.

Response to week 10 lecture.

Censorship / Privacy in social media.

This week lecture was about the privacy on the internet, such as Facebook, there is really not any privacy there. There where also information on how Facebook was founded and how fast it reached people around the world. People believes it is innoncent, but it could in the future become a vry dangerous social network, if the people behind it developes security and privacy polices for the users. Privacy online is very important and people are not aware of teh fact that they are easily exposed with the all the content they put out there.

What would happen if the internet dissapeared one day? The world is developing around the internet. That is how people get their information, that is how news is spread and so on. There is an interesting topic to think about, what will happen if it suddenly was gone? It is scary to think about, but I do think that it will soon be developed again.

Week 9 tutorial task and tutespark.

For the essay topic I have chosen topic number 5. I think this is an interesting topic because for example Facebook is a huge social network these days, everybody has it. And as I have said before, what people write, photoes and videos can tell a lot about a person. So I think I will have a lot to write about.

5. How do social media change our understanding of individual identity, with regard to the kinds of people we have in our social networks?

Evaluation of the course.

I must say that I was kind of nervous and excited about this course when I enrolled. I was nervous because I am very bad at computers (especially macs), and I was excited because it sounded very interesting. I have learned a lot in this course, especially about research! i now know how to make a blog, which is a good experience. There has also been some downs if the tasks has been very hard, but a challenge is always good.
3 good things about the course:
- gaining knowledge about computers and the internet.
- gaining research skills.
- develop myself into the blog society.

3 not so good things about the course:
- I think that week 5 tutorial task was very unethical.
- should be more instruction on how to upload things to the blog.
- should have been proper information about how to use the URL adress the right way from day 1.

But overall it was a very good course! Good luck in the future with new students!

Response to lecture week 9.

Cyberpunk.

This week lecture was about cyberpunk. The lecture notes where not very readable. And as I have been very sick I did not partcipate in theis lecture. The picture I got out of the lecture notes is that it was a lot of focus on computer games and so on. Something I am very against. i think that children should be outside playing and develope themselves and not sit inside the house playing games. I have never really spend any time playing this games (all though I remember my brother did play a bit when we grew up), I was just not interested. I found it quite boring actually, and that is why I have never been interested in computers either. I think it has to much influence on our lifes and controls it to much.

Anyway, we learned a lot about cyberpunk in last week tutorial/tutespark, and I want to refer to what I wrote about cyberpunk in that task.

Week 8 tutorial tasks/ tutespark!

Negative impact of technology on humanity.

I have chosen the topic "negative impact of technology on humanity" as my cyberpunk.

I think topic is something that is important to look at as the world today is developed around technology. How could we even survive without technology. It has a huge impact on our lifes, wherever we turn there is technology in form of a mobilephone, laptopp, tv, microwave and so on. I am not a good internet searcher (but I have become much better after this course), but I managed to find a page that involves this issue. http://www.cyberpunkwiki.org/wiki/index.php?title=What_is_Cyberpunk%3F.

My topic has a following description on the tutespark blog: "Negative Impact of technology on humanity: In a cyberpunked near-future, technology runs rampant, and usually manipulates most societal interactions. Dystopian near futures are very common, but so are futures where the impacts of specific technologies are played out in a world only slightly different from the present. Sacred societal boundaries are often crossed with regularity. Often the earth is severely damaged. Crime and drug use are often key supporting themes".

On this page there is a link to an youtube movie about what cyberpunk is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D80jhU6t-VA&feature=player_embedded.
Cyberpunk is according to the first link: "Cyberpunk is about expressing (often dark) ideas about human nature, technology and their respective combination in the near future".
they kind of highlight the issues according to for example technology in an ironic way, so that we will recieve the message.

i managed to find a video on youtube that is named: The Role of Technology in Society. This ia video that shows how family life has been impact with technology over the years, and how it is affecting the families everyday life. Back in the old days before TV arrived the family sat around the table together to have dinner, then came the TV and soon the attention around the dinner table was at the TV box. After the TV came all the other technology, like discman, mobilephone, gameboys, MP3`s, laptop and so on, and suddenly the family life was all about these inventions, not about each other. It is quite often we see a mother walking around with the baby carriage and talkes on their cellphone. Especially cellphones impact not just our lifes but evryone around us as well. We talk on the phone while we are driving and risk being hurt in traffic, we are constantly by our phones ready to answer everytime a message ticks in no matter where we are. We often see people walking around with their head down texting. How will this use of cellphone affects our health in the future as it is already affecting us a lot. this video shows exactly what i am talking about.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1-iiYRe5KE. (I have problems uploading the videos so I can only share the links.)

After watching this movie I suddenly think of all the newsstories that pups up in the papers from time to time about cellphones and the cancer risk. Since cellphones has not existed for so long it has been difficult to do a lot of research on this problem, but they have found out that it could have an effect on for exampe brain cancer and other tissues. I know this is not a very current news story right now, but I have to say that I think this issue is quite current anyway, and tehy are still doing a lot of research on it, and there will always be released new dicoveries on this field. For a couple of months ago there was a story in one of Norways top news papers about how carefully parents should be when they buy cellphones for their kids. I have tried to find the news story again, but it is not possible. Well i remember I read the article, and it said that researchers find out new things about cellphones impact on our health everyday, and the cancer risk. They claim that talking a lot in the phone gives a higher risk of getting brain cancer, having your phone in your pocket can may even make you steril, and sleeping with your phone next to bed can disturb your sleep. The articke said that to give a cellphone to a six year old was not very wise because of all these new founds, and if you are going to give them one, you should have restricions on how they should use them and how many hours per day. I did some research online and found a page where they explain a lot about cellphone and why it could be danger. http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/cellphones.

Response to lecture week 8.

Virtual philosophy.

Virtual philospohy is about what we "think" is real is actually not real. Virtual reality involves our two senses like sight and hearing. This makes us able to think that something is real when it is not. Like when we read a book, we can have the same reactions to become mad, angry, sad etc. as if we experienced the same in real life. When we play for example a computer game and we are competing against others in a car race, it could feel as it is real life. We are to caught up in the moment to separate fiction and real life.

I think we all have heard about women wanting to have a baby so bad that they loose their period and the pregnancy test is positive, even the blodtest because the woman produces so many of the hormones women get when they are pregnant. They can even feel fetal movement! this a serious menatl illness, but still, it is something virtual, they are so blinde to the feeling of wanting to become a mother that their body belives it as well, but in real life they are not.

Week 7 tutespark.

Free software.

- Try some free software - good examples which are free and easy to download are: Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Gimp, Audacity, amsn, pidgin, etc.Try to use it exclusively for a few days - then decide whether you like it or not! Say why/why not.

The only free software I have used is Mozilla firefox. I used to have it on my computer along with the Internet explorer. But suddenly one day it disappeard, so now I had the chance to get it back. I like Mozilla Firefox because it is easy to use, it is faster than internet explorer. I would definitely recommend Firefox to other friends.

Response to lecture week 7/ Tutorial tasks.

Free culture, Free society.

This week the lecture was about free culture and free society with the key words: community, collabration and choice. Adam Muir hold the lecture and explained to us how the copyright works. I think many of us where a bit shocked over how it is so stricted that people coild actually go to jail if we use someones software without "paying" so the creators will give us premission to use it. For example when we go out to the stores to buy a new computer we often buy the office package to install word etc, and we often pay like 200 dollars for this. There is also a lot of free software that anyone can use and give away without being put in jail for it. This belongs to the public, and the middle between the free and not free is called creative commons, Adam explained to us. This is made to calm the copyright laws down, but not removing it and this opens up to collabration (one of our keywords) in the online community.

Adam also mentioned a site they have here in Australia for creative commons: http://creativecommons.org.au/
As he explained to us here can people who create their own work demand to not have so strict copyrights to the distrubution of their product. Of course the owner has to have some credit for it, but the owner decide how he/shes work is put out there.

We all have a choice when it comes to the internet and the software. We are allowed to use free software or the software we buy at the stores with our computer for example. Free software is easily found on the internet and many people uses it. Why pay a lot of money for something when you can get something that is just as good for free.

Tutorial activity.

1. What is creative commons and how could this licensing framework be relevant to your own experience at university?

As I understood after being in Adams lecture creative commons is a not for profit organisastion that gives licences so peoples ordinary work can be used by others. As I have mentioned in earlier post I am really not a big compuer person, I hardly know how to turn it on. And Facebook, hotmail and google is teh only thing I usually uses. In my University student life I like to use books and other reviews as sources because I know there is a lot of non serious things online, and I think it is hard to find what I am looking for. And I am going to be a teacher, so I don`t see how creative commons would be relevant to my studies or future jobs. But I think it was interesting to learn about it.

2.Find 3 examples of works created by creative commons and embed them in your blog.

I did some search around the internet and came across a list over work created by creative commons licences on Wikipedia. One of these is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Library_of_Science.

"The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a nonprofit open-access scientific publishing project aimed at creating a library of open access journals and other scientific literature under an open content license. It launched its first journal, PLoS Biology, in October 2003 and has steadily created another seven journals".

There is several other listing as well on this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_works_available_under_a_Creative_Commons_License.

3. Find an academic article which discusses creative commons using a database or online journal. Provide a link to and a summary of the article.

4. Have a look at Portable Apps (a pc based application) – provide a brief description of what it is and how you think this is useful.

The search online gave me this link to a webpage: http://portableapps.com/. They explain on this page that portable apps is: "PortableApps.com provides a truly open platform that works with any hardware you like (USB flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive, etc). The entire platform is open source built around an open format that any hardware or software provider can use". This means that portable apps is a software that is downloaded to be used on any of the listings below, and it is very useful for anybody who does not want to drag their computer along all the time.

Response to lecture week 6/ tutespark

New media and social media.

This week Adam Muir had a lecture about new media and social media. He discussed what virtual community and internet identity is. He said that when internet was first abel to use for people virtual community was like a little community og people that communicated with each other through the internet and made relationships this way. In this way people could for example pretend to be someone else then they are.

Then people started to open different forums where people with the same interest could discuss what they had in common. Adam called this online communication. Forums does still exist today, but this online communication has developed into social networks like Facebook, Twitter, My space, blogs, etc. And people can now share their content with everyone else.

Adam gave us some questions that is this week tutespark.

- Who owns the content you put on the internet on various sites?
- This includes pictures, video, text, etc?
- Think about all the content you upload onto social networking sites - Do you own it?
- Who has the right to use your creations?

The only content I upload on the internet is photoes and videos on Facebook. I know that I do not own what I put on Facebook, as a friend of my told me so. And it is quite scary that we actually do not have any control over our own content. On Facebook we are able to copy and paste the photos of other peoples facebook accounts. I have even done it myself. And this happens without our knowledge. This is why people can be exposed and their pictures manipulated on internet web pages that they do not wont to be involved with. I know that this has happen to people, and I think it is strange that Facebook hasen`t put a lock on the photos for example, so people are not able to copy them.

In Norway we have this internet page called http://www.daria.no/skole/ where people upload their school assignment that they have recieved good grades on when they are high school students. Everybody is able to copy this assignments and take credit for it as it was their own work. I know for a fact that some students at my high school did this, some where caught and some got away for it.

Once you upload content on the internet you do not really have any control over it, and everybody who uses the internet can easily steal your content, abuse it on other internet pages or even take credit for your work. It is a risk we all take when we upload something on any webpages. Many people does not have this in mind when they put things out there, and it is scary to see what people actually upload some times. People who apply for jobs in Norway could risk that their future boss check their facebook to see what kind of person you are. So it is very important to have a closed profile. People have lost the opportunity to have their dream job if they have for example to much party pictures on their facebook. The picture on Facebook, blogs and other social networks can tell a lot about you as a person, so people have to be careful of what content they put on their Facebook account.

Week 5 - tute exercise.

The tutetask this time is to go in groups and make a culture jam. Then we have to post on the blog who is doing what in the group, and how we are going to make the culture jam, and what it is about in week 5. The finished product, as I was told by the New Communication Technology team, is not due until week 9.

In the first tutorial there where hardly any people to make a group with, so I decided to wait until the next tutorial to make a group. But I started to do some research on culture jam. I found many interesting things, and idea`s. You can basicly do everything. Just not anything illegal of course. I am very excited about this project! So when I got in to the next tutorial I formed a group with Lisa, Sophie, Phill and Craig. And we started shooting idea`s. We are five people in the group, so it takes sometime to decide on something. But after a while, going back and forth, we came up with an idea with sharks. The way we came up with this idea is that we started thinking of what we can use in teh local area. And as we all know, here at the Gold Coast there are many channels where the sharks get in. This made us think about ways to make this a culture jam. Around the Coast there is shark nets, but there are some cleaver sharks that does not mind the net. So where thinking that we could make something that would "scare" people, something that would make the news. Because sharks are scary! And it attracks peoples attention. We came up with several idea`s of how we should do this, and I think the most of us where voting for the filming. We are all collecting information on how we could do this. So we are meeting up again to share the information, and start filming. We want to make something shocking that will attrac people`s attention, so we could make the news. My job is to search the web for shark stories, so that we could have a look at what people have did before, and accidents etc. That is everybody elses jobs as well, to search the internet for shark stories and gathering information about the subject. We haven`t really delegated the work, so we are all doing some research. We really want to do something great! So we are putting a lot of effort into making a great culture jam!

Response to lecture week 5.

"Consumption and production".

This week the lecturer introduced us to the topic "consumption and production". These are both very interesting topics. This lecture lead us into the world of activie citizens that again leads us into culture jamming witch is this week tutorial activity tasks. After taking a look at my notes after this lecture I found a note where I had written down a sentence that said "we are cumsomers of the content". This is also a sentence that is written in the course content file of week 5. And I want to reflect a bit around this sentence. What does it mean? I think the meaning of this is that we the people are affected by the advertisement and cummorcials that we see around us. Our subconscious take in every thing that we see a in a way save`s it in our minds. So the next time we are out shopping at this famous brand (a famous brand made by the power of the media), we buy the clothes that was showed in the ad, or on the cummorcial on TV. It works the same way when we go into stores or supermarkets. We always buy the brands that we know about, and these are the brands that we see around us.

We never think about how these things affect us. Just take a look at all the new things showing up in the market every day, like Iphone, Ipod, new computers, internet stores and so on. This ad`s affect us. It makes people buy it. This is propaganda, half of the stuff we are introduced to is just rubbish. I was suprised to know that there where so many social activist that is out there and doing there culture jam. Like twisting ad`s and cummorcial or doing something spectacular with the important people around us, or the environment. In the lecture they where called "citizen journalism", and I like to call them social activist because they are working on their own and not for a firm. They find information, which they use to make the ad`s backwards and other issues that they upload online for people to see. I have to be honest again and say that I haven`t seen a lot of these culture jam videos or ad`s, because I mostly watch news, or read the papers. I am an old fashion prson I think. But I think it is very cool when the social activist actually make the news, and I hope that is what we will do with our culture jam. The internet is really full of opportunities!

Week 5 tutespark.

Culture jamming.

This week we got a task that said that we had to find out what is considered to be the first culture jam. But first I want to take a look at what culture jam really means. I am a international student, and as much as I do not want to admit this, it is sometimes a bit hard to understand what the tutor/lecturer want us to find. So I looked up culture jam online, and got to read a bit about it. And it is really interesting! I will say that the definision of culture jam is a kind of tactic used by social activist to make people see the "real" truth behind advertising. This social activist is the consumers of the ad`s. They often use the all ready published advertising to front their vision. This method is used to make people see that advertsing is just propanganda, and that is just tricking us to buy, or do the stuf that they front in the advertisement. Let`s take a typical commercial, like the ones that for example H&M use. Here they show of their clothes on skinny skinny girls, giving the message, that if you buy these clothes you would look like the girl on the picture. The biggest problem with this kind of commercial is that the models becomes thinner and thinner every year. What does this do with people`s confidence? It gives a underline message that makes insecure girls wanna lose weight. There is a fact that eating disorders is starting to increase around the world. It becomes more and more common to know someone that has eating disorders or have had it! This say something about the world! And it is in these situations that culture jam activist is good to have. They turn this commercial picture of the perfect person on the head, and show us real people.

In Norway we had this commercial on TV, where there wore real women posing in their underwear to advertise a skincream. I is not a norwegian commercial, it was just showed a lot on TV back home, and that is why I remember it. People like to see that real people like themself is used as positive role models.

This ad was made in 2006 to connect with real women. It was a big hit for Dove, and it did not cost much. People loved the ad, and it was a positive thing for Dove, beacuse then they managed to sell more products. I think this is the way ad`s should be, real!

When it comes to the first example of culture jamming, I will say that this was a hard one to find. And I think the answer will depend on the source. I managed to find out something on Wikipedias pages. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_jamming

It says that culture jamming can be tracked as far back as the 1950s. And the source says that it was one very active group in Europe called the Situationists. Their leader was a man called Guy Debord. The group saw everything from radioes and TVs as a threat. I also found out that this group was responsible for a mass strike in France 1968. http://libcom.org/thought/situationists-an-introduction

There are many debates going on around the world about fitness and health. People are getting bigger and bigger. There is to much unhealthy food everywhere we go. The commercial and adds makes people buy the junk food, the candy and the soda`s. In Norway they have now forbidden commercials of junkfood, candy and soda`s on TV. And the candy at supermarkets can`t no longer be placed in front of the cash register. I found a really funny poster about this unhealthy way of advertising that really shows us that we got to do something. The culture jam uses the sarcasm to make their point.

This poster is an old poster that was made by the Soda Pop Board of America. And they managed to give the message to the parents that they should not feed their babies Cola, beacuse it can give them diabetes, obesity and other disabilities and illnesses. I am not sure when the ad was made, I can not find an exact date.

This culture jam was made to make people see what alcohol do to them. The culture jam activist made the original ad into what they called an "Absolute Impotence", where they make the bottle look like a person would look like when they drink alcohol. The ad was made by the adbusters, and I think they made it in 2009, at least that is what i the website says. I find it very hard to find out when they where made.

This website has a lot of culture jams! I just have to put in one more!

This culture jam is also made by the adbusters. It was made to put a laugh on the fact that McDonald`s food is very unhealthy, and that people could actually die of eating McDonald`s every day. It is kind of a funny way of getting the information out there though. But it works! People is dragged to ad`s and commercial of this type. It is in a way shocking and funny.

Response to lecture week 4.

"From the Very Big Screen to the Very Small".

This lecture was about the development of the cinema/screen technology. We got to learn about how it all started with the birth of the cinema in 1895 in France. It was basicly short films that was showed. The full length feature film was released in 1906, and from this stage it is not far until the full length animated film about Disney`s Snow White was showed in 1937. This is still a classicer. I have hardly ever heard of any one who has never seen Snow White, this is a legendary movie that every generations is introduced to. The picture to the left is a poster from 1937 when the Snow White was released.

After the cinema came the TV in 1939. And this was the biggest competition to the cinema, because now people could watch the films in their own livingroom. So to keep up the competition, the 3D films was released in 1952. As the develpoment has been huge in the cinema/TV world sense the birth of the cinema in 1895, we could still se that the methods invented then is used today, like the 3D movies and for example the short films. It is still very common with short films. Small film producers uses this films in a way of showing their work with going bankrupt.

Today there is plenty of movies to choose from on TV, and the most of us has payed TV, so we could broadcast other channels from around the world. On the internet we have the famous Youtube, where there are thousands of movies viewed daily. Many people uses Youtube to front their work. And people could get popularity around their movie. I have even heard of people that has been offered jobs after posting something on Youtube.

Even though TV and the internet are the cinemas biggest competition along with other things of course, people are still dragged to the cinema. Befor ebig premiers of for example an new movie from Harry Potter, people are sleeping in line to get the best tickets weeks before the film is showed! And the cinemas start making up their own treats to attract people, like her in Australia they have the famous Gold Class where people can relax in comfertable chairs, order food and even a beer! This livingroom feeling makes people wanna go to the cinema. I think it is great that people still uses it, it is a important piece of the world culture and the countries individually.

Week 4 - tute tasks.

1. Where and when did usable online video start?

I was not able to find any good answer to this question.

2.In the lecture we heard about technological innovations that were used by the studios to lure audiences. (mostly to combat the popularity of TV) What recent innovations are being used to lure us in the movies? What are they luring us from?

As I read this question I think about the 3D movies, where we have glasses on that makes the movie more real. It gives us an illusion of being in the movie. It hides all the "oh, that does not look real" scenes. People like to go and se the 3D films, because they know they will have a good time. They know they will be dragged into the movie, and they will not be able to see any faults. It gives an image of a real thing.

3.Are short films still being made? Why? Who pays for them to be made?

I will say that short films are still being made. I did some research online, and I found several film festivals for short films. Like the Tropfest that is the worlds largest film festival, or many others over in the states like Los Angeles short film festivals, the Manhatten short film festivals, the Miami short film festivals, and there are also one in London, the London short film festival, and many many more.

http://lashortsfest.com/content.asp?PageID=2
http://www.msfilmfest.com/
http://www.miamishortfilmfestival.com/
http://www.shortfilms.org.uk//

I think short films are still being made, so that small filmmakers still can show off their work, and not have to use a lot of money to produce them. And at this filmfestivals they can be showed to the world, and producers and other authoritys can se their skills.

4.The term viral is thrown about adhoc but what does it mean in film/movie arena? Give some examples.

I am not sure how to answer this question, as I am not sure how to put it right, or if I have understood it. But I think the term viral means that it makes a film popular. And often when people uploades a film to the internet, people can share it with each other, and quite often we can se that some movie get more viewers than others, and then becomes popluar in the internet world.

"This question is answered out of my lecture notes and the lecture content online".

5.Online video distribution isn't limited to the short film format. We are now starting to see television styled shows made solely for internet release (webisodes). Find an example of this style of content and discuss how viewing television content in this way can positively and negatively affect the viewer's experience.

I managed to find a website with a lot of webisodes, but I have some problems uploading videos to this blog, so I can only give a link to the page and the film that I have choosen.

http://www.visiblemeasures.com/mashable

Here is the webisodes that I choose. It is called "Key of Awesome". It is a comedy/musical.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MP_G6arpVI&feature=player_embedded

I think viewing these episodes that it could both be a positive and negvative experience for the the viewer. In the positive way people could watch it when ever they want, they could choose between a dusin of films. But in the nagtive way the resolution is bad, and the experience that you get from watching a movie in your own livingroom with a bunch of friends is way more better than this. I find this webisodes artificial. I got to say that I didn`t really like it, but I can understand why people do.

Week 4 Tutespark. Big screen to small screen.

This is a australian short movie about a couple who has a love fight, and things gets really bad. It is shocking and hilarious. The thing that makes this short film worth seeing is the tention that is built up in the viewers at all times. We know that something is going to happen, and the stuf that do happend, is shocking, terrible and hilarious at the same time. I think it`s really great that the film also are an australian.

This a short movie made for the internet. It was made to compete in a film festival of short movies from different countries of the world. People watch them online and vote, then they have a festival where the winners gets a price.
http://www.cortoweb.com/icfilms/eng/contest.php

This is a short scary movie. That tricks your brain. It is a bit strange at first, but then it gets really creepy! This film will be popular because it makes the viewers wanna find out more.

The tutespark week 3. Three digital devices.

The tutespark this week was to find three digital devices that are not electronic that is used to communicate.

1: The first thing that I think about when I read this question is the Morse code.

2: I did some research online and I found something called the Braille a-system. It says that the braille system is a "tactile system of raised dots representing letters of the alphabet." This is the most effective system to contact the blind people. And the web page says it was invented in Paris by a man named Louis Braille.

Response to lecture week 3.

"A Short History of Computing and the Internet".

This week the lecture ws about the history of computers and the internet. In this 50 min lecture we got to learn some new things, and some I did know from before. I think this i s a very interesting topic, and it is a topic that we can discuss for ages.

If we start to look at networking, there was a time before computers. Back in the old days the networking went through books. And the development from that stage until now is an interesting journey. If we take a look at the digital technology, we can say that old cash registers is a form of a old digital technology, because it could calculate. The mechanical computer devices did rulled before we had digital computers. If we look at the history there is always more technology invented after a war. During world war 2, they used several communication forms and technologies to delete the enemy and keep things a secret. These technologies gets more developed after the war and becomes the seeds for todays computers, internet and technology.
Radio = radar = computers!

The first Pc was released in 1975. This was a quite large computer, and did weigh a lot. The biggest problem with this computer was that it didn`t hav eany language. And this issue made people like Bill Gates excited. He dropped out of school and started ineventing a language for the Altair called BASIC, and to make people buy this program he started a little company, actually in his garage, called Microsoft! And more and more companies transferd into the PC world!

More and more people, or computer "nerds" as we call them, started exchange ideas. And this led to the start of the Apple. To men, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, produced the Apple 1. They made this product for people who were more interested in the software and the possibilities then the PC hardware. These computers became a hit, and the guys sold a lot of it. So when Steve Jobs where 25 years old, he wa worth $100 million dollars!

Today the computers/Mac is much faster, and everything goes online. The internet is what controls the world. There is computers everywhere. The development of the internet started after the Sputnik 1 was invented by the russians. the US feared that they would take over, so they inevnted the internet from the late 1950s to the early 1970s in the US, by a group of people. And as many think, it was not Al Gore who invented the internet.

I think this was a really interesting and exciting lecture, and I can hardly stop writing about this topic. I think that it is really interesting to find out who made the internet, when was invented, and everything about the computers development.

Response to lecture week 2.

This week we learned about how the language of the cinema works. There is different types of way to express a situation, and show the viewers what is happening in the movie. We have the 5 W, and H, that is used to put together a story. The 5 W`s is: what, when, where, who and why, and then comes the H, that is: how. To make a story out of this we have to use different shots to show the viewers the story. There are many different shots sizes that we use, from very long shot to extreme close up.

To answer the 5 W`s and the H we use different shots. The who is answered by taking a picture close up to the caracter, that shows the face very clearly. The what is answered when you take a picture with the caracter in action, it is good to use a mid shot when taking this picture. The where is taking with a long shot, to show where the caracter is. The when is showing when things happens, what time it is, and so on, and it`s commone to use both a wide shot and the close up. The why is answered by taking a big close up picture to reveal something about the caracter or the situation. The how is a tricky one, and can be a bit hard to answer sometimes, it explain what is happening, like an event or something. So it is common to take a series of close up pictures or just use a medium close up picture.

When you take pictures, there is many things to think about. How the person is standing in the picture and how the picture view is. The rule of thirds tells you to not put the person in the middle of the picture, but a bit to the side, so it creates a balance in the picture. It is also important to remember that the person has "head room" and "talking room". Head room is taking a picture of the caracter when you have just enough space for the whole head, and half the upper body. The talking room is a bit more close up, and you show more of the head than in the "head room" shot, and it is important to remember not to put the caracter to far to the side in the picture. That is why the rule of thirds has to be used all the way.

When to caracters are going to talk to each other in the scene, the 180 degree rule breaks in. The two people are facing each other in a way that makes an 180 degree line on each side of them. To make the viewers more interested and drive their curiosity forward, you have to take a picture that makes a statement. Like when there is a picture of the caracter running away from the killer, or a close up picture of the caracter when it makes a scared face when he/she saw something terrible.

Response to lecture week 1 + week one tute task.

Summary of week 1 lecture.

This first week of New Communication Technology lecture, we got to se the definition of communication and technology. We learned about the differences between "new" and "old" technology. All of this computer stuf is very new to me, and I have to be honest, because I have really never given it much attention, just the basic stuf that everybody knows. But I find the information in this lecture very useful, and it makes me wanna know more. How has the communication technology really developed? In the old days they used to communiacate with writing on stone walls, or smoke signals is used, than the morse code. As we go further into the future, there is telegrams, letters, newspapers is published so people can pay attention to what happens around them. Soon the telephones are invented and people can reach each other in a totally different way. TV is invented and the communication with the world is in peoples livingroom, and so came the internet that was invented in the late 1950s to the early 1970s in the United States. And the developing until today has been huge! There is so many ways to communicate online these days, that is almost confusing! There is facebook, twitter, myspace, foursquare and you name it. It is almost like we don`t have to meet each other face to face anymore:)

The face to face communication is in my eyes the best way to communicate. Face expression is really important to see what people think about different topics. I find the information in the lecture really interesting, and I am looking forward to learn more about this subject!

Answer to the tutespark week 1.

The differences between new and old technology is several things. Look at TV for example, many people will not see TV as an old technology, but if we look closer, it is. The reason for this is the internet. The internet is the new revolution that makes everything more suitable for customers. You can get news updates more quickly, and you can choose what news you want to read about. On TV you have to wait until the end of the newscast to able to catch the news you want to see.

When a technology is more useable, and makes it easier for people to use it to access information, for example news, it makes the other technology "old".
